He served as deputy fleet chaplain, U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia before being forward deployed as force chaplain U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the fleet chaplain for U.S. 5th Fleet headquartered in the Kingdom of Bahrain, supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

Scott was detailed as fleet chaplain, U.S. Pacific Fleet and command chaplain, U.S. Pacific Command, Honolulu, Hawaii.  There he served in a position of oversight for 500 Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, and Navy service component Religious Support Teams.

Most recently, Scott was detailed to the Office of the Chief of Navy Chaplains and became the 19th chaplain of the U.S. Marine Corps and deputy chief of Navy chaplains in August 2014.

Scott assumed his current duty as the 27th chief of Navy chaplains on July 23, 2018.

His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (two awards), Meritorious Service Medal (four awards) Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), and the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards).
